Welcome to VELA's Blog: A Space for Support, Stories, and Strength

Updated: May 20

If you’re raising a child with a disability, you may know this feeling… sitting in your car after an appointment, replaying everything you just heard. Staring at another confusing email from school. Lying awake at night wondering, “Am I doing enough?”

You are not alone.

These are the moments so many parents live in - filled with questions, overwhelm, deep love, and the constant drive to do right by your child. There’s no clear roadmap for this journey, and that’s exactly why this space exists.

Welcome to VELA’s Blog, a place for families, caregivers, and anyone walking alongside this community. A place where we don’t add to the noise, but help make things feel clearer, more manageable, and more human.

Here, we focus on what truly helps: simplifying what feels complicated, offering real-life tools, validating your experience, and reminding you of your strength.

This isn’t a space for perfection - it’s a space for honesty, growth, and community.

Why We’re Starting This Blog

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of walking alongside so many incredible families. We’ve seen parents go from feeling overwhelmed and unsure to confident, informed, and empowered. And along the way, one thing has always been clear:

Parents need consistent, trustworthy, and human-centered support. Not just in big moments, but in the everyday ones too. This blog is our way of showing up for our community more often. A place you can return to for guidance, connection, and reminders that you are not doing this alone.

Because as one of our facilitators shared, sometimes all it takes is one sentence: “You are the expert on your child,”  to change how a parent shows up in the world.

What You Can Expect

Each month, you’ll find stories, insights, and practical guidance written by people who truly understand this journey, parents, caregivers, and members of the VELA community who have sat in the same meetings, faced the same questions, and felt the same mix of emotions.

Together, we’ll explore what it looks like to build community and feel less alone, take care of yourself in the middle of it all, and navigate complex systems like healthcare, therapies, and school services with more clarity and confidence. We’ll share real-life strategies for everyday challenges like preparing for summer, managing benefits, planning for the future, and understanding how to access support at school.

You’ll also hear honest, powerful stories from our community, because sometimes the most meaningful support is simply knowing someone else has been there too.

Our Community Guidelines

This blog is more than a place to read, it’s a space where you can share your thoughts, experiences, and questions, too. Just like in our support groups, we want this to feel safe, supportive, and welcoming for everyone who shows up here.

To help protect that kind of space, we ask everyone in our community to keep these shared values in mind:

Confidentiality matters

This is a public space, so please be mindful when sharing personal details about your child, your family, or others.

Lead with compassion - for yourself and others

Everyone is carrying something. Approach each other with kindness, and give yourself that same grace.

Speak from your own experience

Using “in my experience” reminds us that every child and family is different and that’s okay.

Honor that everyone is on their own path

What works for one family may not work for another. We can share without comparing or judging.

Share the air

Make room for different voices, stories, and perspectives. Every experience matters.

All feelings are welcome

This journey comes with a wide range of emotions. There’s space here for all of them without shame or judgment.

At the heart of it all, we ask: Does this help someone feel seen, supported, or less alone? If it does, you’re in the right place.

A Final Thought
