If you are raising a child with a disability, you may recognize this feeling… sitting in your car after an appointment, trying to process everything you just heard. Or staring at your phone after another confusing email from school. Or lying awake at night wondering, “Am I doing enough? Am I doing this right?” You are not alone.
At VELA, we meet parents of children with disabilities in these exact moments every single day. Moments filled with questions, overwhelm, love, and a deep desire to do right by your child. We know this journey doesn’t come with a clear roadmap and that’s exactly why this blog exists.
Today, we’re so excited to welcome you into something new: VELA's Blog, a space created for families, supporters, and anyone who wants to better understand, connect, and walk alongside this community.
Why We’re Starting This Blog
Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of walking alongside so many incredible families. We’ve seen parents go from feeling overwhelmed and unsure to confident, informed, and empowered. And along the way, one thing has always been clear:
Parents need consistent, trustworthy, and human-centered support. Not just in big moments, but in the everyday ones too. This blog is our way of showing up for our community more often. A place you can return to for guidance, connection, and reminders that you are not doing this alone.
Because as one of our facilitators shared, sometimes all it takes is one sentence: “You are the expert on your child,” to change how a parent shows up in the world.
What You Can Expect
We’ll be sharing content every month, written by the people who live this work every day - our team of parent facilitators and staff. These aren’t just professionals. They are parents, caregivers, and advocates who have sat in the same meetings, asked the same questions, and felt the same emotions.
Our content will focus on five core areas:
Emotional Resilience
Because this journey is not just logistical, it’s deeply emotional. We’ll talk about burnout, self-compassion, mindset shifts, and ways to take care of you while caring for your child.
Navigating the Medical System
From evaluations to diagnoses to managing care, we’ll break things down in simple, clear ways so you can make informed decisions with confidence.
School Advocacy
IEPs, 504 plans, meetings, emails, we’ll help you understand your rights, prepare for conversations, and advocate effectively for your child.
Why VELA
We’ll share more about what makes VELA special, not just what we do, but why we do it. The heart behind the programs, the impact, and the families who shape our mission.
Community Storytelling
Real stories. Real parents. Real journeys. Because sometimes the most powerful thing you can hear is: “Me too.”
As one of our team members shared, this journey can feel like a constant fight, but also one filled with love, purpose, and resilience. Those are the stories we want to lift up here.
What Makes This Space Different
There’s a lot of information out there. A lot of advice. A lot of noise. We’re not here to add to the overwhelm.
We’re here to:
Simplify what feels complicated
Validate what you’re feeling
Offer practical, real-life tools
And remind you of your strength
This is not a space for perfection. It’s a space for growth, honesty, and community.
Our Community Guidelines
We want this blog to feel safe, supportive, and welcoming for every parent who finds their way here. To help protect that, we ask everyone in our community to follow a few simple ground rules:
Lead with kindness
Every parent’s journey is different. Assume good intentions and respond with empathy.
Share, don’t shame
It’s okay to have different perspectives, but this is not a space for judgment, criticism, or comparison.
Respect lived experiences
What worked for one family may not work for another. Honor each story as valid and real.
Protect privacy
Be mindful when sharing details about your child or others. This is a public space.
Keep it supportive
Whether you’re commenting or sharing a post, ask yourself: “Does this help someone feel less alone?”
More Than a Blog—A Growing Community
Our hope is that this blog becomes more than something you read.
We hope it becomes:
A place you turn to when you need clarity
A place you come back to when you need encouragement
A place you share with another parent who’s just starting out
Because the truth is, parenting a child with additional needs can feel isolating. And we are deeply committed to changing that.
As we often say at VELA: You don’t have to do this alone.

A Final Thought
